The Emmett Police Department “Beat the Heat” program was started in 1999 when Chief Blaine Hyde supported Officer Steve Nebeker’s participation in the school based drag race event at the local Firebird Raceway. A city “police car” was used to demonstrate the equipment and “tools” that are used by many police departments throughout the United States. The response to this program has been overwhelming. The positive relationships built between the students, their parents and the officers is a tremendous benefit for our community. This program has continued to the present time. The program expanded somewhat in 2002 when Detective Steve Nebeker personally purchased an ex-police car, a 1989 “9C1” Chevrolet Caprice. After several months of restoring and swapping out the old parts, this car was ready for the 2003 racing season. The car is fully equipped with a safety cage, radar unit, radio, light bar, siren, police graphics and other police equipment. The car is kept as original as possible so it can be driven safely on the roadway. In 2003 the car was shown at many car shows, safety programs, school events and also at a number of racing events at Firebird Raceway. Every High School race was attended and over 20 trophies were presented to high school racers who participated in the program.. In 2004 the car received a motor and transmission upgrade and was again shown at car shows, safety events and at the racetrack. High School students enjoyed competing against this car at every high school race. With the newer motor the car is able to reach 97 miles per hour in a quarter mile in 14.01 seconds. In 2005 the car continued to race in the high school drags with trophies being given out to all whom won or placed second in the beat the heat challenge. The car was also featured in a few car shows around the community. This project and car would not have been possible without the overwhelming support and contribution of the Emmett Community and businesses. A very big thank goes out to: |
